Aboukir Typeface

I designed this typeface inspired by the missing metal letters which once adorned Nelson's Monument on Glasgow Green. While the words themselves may be long gone, the beveled shapes and holes left behind informed this slab serif.

This typeface was created in collaboration with designer Lucas Liccini.

Soon after the monument’s construction in 1805 the obelisk was struck by lightning, leaving a long structural crack in the monument. This inspired the ‘imperfect’ shapes within the typeface.

The sample book was risoprinted as a zine, incorporating the stone texture of the monument and the colour of Glasgow Green.
